Jonesy

A lovely sunny evening saw the first of two consecutive Wolds Derby games. Walton walked the short distance across the field to Burton expecting a tough game against a team that loves to beat Walton. Instead it turned out to be a rather curiously uncompetitive game with the home side not seemingly interested when batting. On a positive note, special congratulations to Nick Wells who managed to turn up early for once, arriving before 7:15 this week, poor daisy!
Walton batted first and got off to a slow start against opening bowler Smith (No, not that one, this one is slim and athletic) with a little more than 0 off the over. Smith continued a tight spell but with runs coming freely from the other end and no wickets down it was a good start for Walton. I’m not sure what the opening stand was but both went in reasonably quick succession and with Ross “Wolverine” Mathews getting 55 and Dave Holden making 45 you get the picture. Both were in fluent form with the bat running hard, finding the boundary and losing balls. With further good contributions from Jason Kettle, Jez Clark and Nick Wells the score moved onto160 (ish) by the end. Nick moved into unfamiliar territory during his innings by actually running a 3 (three)! This was met with shock and awe from the witnessing teammates. Skipper Billy found himself in the middle for an over or so at the end providing the on-field comedy entertainment.
For the Burton Innings “Wolverine” Mathews was tossed the new (well new to us) ball to utilise his pace and bounce and a good opening over saw the batsmen getting the odd run but seemingly “having a look” at “Wolfey”. Then came a welcome return to the bowling line up for Simon “Blackers” Blackham with his secret service slow (it’s like military medium but slower). Blackers put it on the spot ball after ball and may have even started with a maiden (my memory is terrible . . .and for one so young!). Either way he made it difficult to get the ball away, again, maybe they were taking a look at him. That said at no point did there seem to be much effort to have a go against any bowler, walked singles where there was a good chance of a two, mmm. Anyway, two good spells, rewarded both openers with wickets. Next into the attack were Viv Richards */Glenn McGrath */Mark “Batman” Jones * (* Delete as applicable) and young Reeser. Jonesy had trouble with his run up and started with a wide but straight away found the rhythm of the previous week, taking two wickets. In addition there was a run out, following through Jonesy picked up the ball and seeing the batsman stood out of his ground rolled the ball towards the stumps fully expecting the batsman to place his willow or his foot behind the line. As it happens he just stood and watched the ball hit the stumps and muttered “oh yeah”. Reese also had trouble with his run up initially, or so we thought. His first two balls were called No-Balls, everyone assumed he’s overstepped but no, he had failed to advise the umpire of his action! McGrath now gave way to let Butty have the last over from the swings end and this was the only time our total looked in any danger as the wides and byes clocked up on the scoreboard. Butty claimed he was bowling a good line but the ball was moving violently . . . mmmmm. There was one good point during the over when Nick managed to this week stop the ball going through his legs, an achievement met with cheers and whooops from the rest of the team. So with only about a hundred required off the last over who was going to bowl at the death?? There was only one man for the job, Dave “I’m a bricky” Smith, yes you heard it right Smithy. So with much trepidation in the field Dave came in off 14 paces and gave his first ball some air (??) the guy swung edged and was caught at slip, I say slip, it was more like fly slip, well OK, more like third man. The fact was Wolverine ran a good 30 yards to take a great catch over his shoulder to give Dave the wicket he so richly didn’t deserve. The order then went into the field to place hands in pockets because if Dave gets another wicket “We’ll never hear the last of it!” And so the game ended in traditional style in the anchor.
Next week the big one, it’s crunch time Wymeswold! Bring it on!
(Note to self, must try to take more notice of our innings so I can write more!)
